kevin, I am listening to your book and I have mixed feelings about it. It definitely has made an impression on me. My husband's grandmother taught in Forest at the same time you attended school there, so there is interest there for me and my family. I am horrified by the awful treatment and abuse you received from the hands of the creepy Minister and the gross stranger in the theater. I cannot imagine what you went through, that is truly horrifying. I think the descriptive nature of the sex scenes is definitely warranted because it forms the culmulative awfulness of the scenes. People should hear details because you have nothing to be ashamed about. That man is just horrible. I guess I have problems with the other sex descriptions in the book, like of the little girl from across the street and your relationship with Frank. I think it was over kill and was gratuitous. I am not sure why it is important to describe the actions of that little girl. You could say that you two played doctor or that you two looked at each other's genitals. I thought it was too graphic. I certainly did not want to hear about you and Frank. That is totally personal between you two. I think your story should definitely be told but do we have to have all the gory details where it is not necessary? Maybe that is the only way you can tell it. I do not think I would feel the same way if you lived in another state or I had no familiarity with the characters. It did not bother me as much when Augusten Burroughs describe his sex scenes in Running with Scissors and his follow up book, Dry. So maybe I feel bad for people (not the abusers) who have to face people in Mississippi and maybe did not want their personal lives exposed, like maybe Frank or the little girl from across the street. I want to let my mother-in-law read it and my husband's great aunt but I know they will by offended by the non-essential sex scenes. They are not homophobes either. They are teachers and are more on the liberal side. My mother-in-law knew the murders of the 3 civil rights workers was wrong and she grew up in Philadelphia and was in her teens. Their family never said the N word. But she came from an educated family, your mother was educated so she was more accepting. Anyway random thoughts. I hope to goodness you have gotten some good therapy and it sounds like the book was cathartic for you. That is awful the abuse you suffered. It sounds like you have a good family in your siblings and friends. I will pray for your health and I hope you continue to stay as healthy as ever.

Kevin this is one of your best pieces of writing. It is like a continuation of your book.
I really really like it. I like the parts about basketball. I think the reason you are such a good writer is that you are able to KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL. Just like your father just a different type of ball.
I like the parts about being different and growing up different. That is so true for any and everyone who has felt they are"the other". And that is why people are responding so to your book. And of course it is not necessary to be gay to be "different". All it takes is that feeling of being an outsider. A spy on the world in which we find ourselves.
Yes I hope you can get some rest soon. I look forward to meeting you here at your reading in Washington,D.C. on the 26th. I have been telling my friends to come and buy your book and to tell their friends to come and buy your book. Your blog and the responses on this message board are terrific. Yes you are right it what you have written about proxys. Or as Bob Dylan wrote long ago "You should not let other people get your kicks for you". So true. And remember what he wrote in the line, "One day your magazine husband will just have to go". And something else he told me once applies to you: "You are a brave cat."
